DanceTime Street contains just the Street dance rhythm from the complete DanceTime Deluxe app, and represents excellent value for anyone learning just one dance. |
Street dance, more formally known as vernacular dance, is an umbrella term used to describe dance styles that evolved outside of dance studios in any available open space such as streets, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. They are often improvisational and social in nature encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and the other dancers.
These dances generally evolve out of urban and suburban spaces in some form of underground culture or region; they are a part of the vernacular culture of that geographical area (as if they were folk dances; although since the advent of the internet, the dances seem to be shared amongst people with the same musical interest worldwide). Therefore, street dance refers to modern folk dance with the term ‘street’ being more accurate since much of the modern world is now urbanised.
Some examples of street dance include B-boying, more commonly known as breakdance, which originated in New York City, Melbourne Shuffle which originated in Melbourne, Australia and Tecktonik which originated in Paris, France.
When you are learning a new dance, getting some good music to practice to, or just to enjoy, can be very difficult. The music is taking over and you want more of it in your life, but don’t know where to start.
To make the process a little easier, we’ve rounded up a selection of our favourite pieces by genre, and provided links to iTunes where available. If you have a particular track that you think should be featured here, let us know. Remember, musicians have to earn a living too. If you like it, please buy it.
